NAC

What is NAC?

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a modified form of the amino acid cysteine, enhanced with an acetyl group that improves its stability and bioavailability. As a precursor to glutathione, NAC provides the body with the raw materials needed to synthesize this critical antioxidant. Unlike direct glutathione supplementation, NAC can be easily absorbed and transported across cell membranes, where it’s converted to cysteine and then incorporated into glutathione production.

NAC has been used medicinally for decades, originally developed as a mucolytic agent to break down mucus in respiratory conditions. However, its role as a glutathione precursor has expanded its therapeutic applications significantly. The acetyl group attached to cysteine makes NAC more stable than free cysteine and allows it to cross cellular barriers more effectively, making it an efficient way to boost intracellular glutathione levels.
